STAR smog check
For renewal notices that name a STAR station.
California directs some vehicles to STAR-certified stations. If your notice says "STAR station," bring your vehicle here and we will run the test the state asks for.

STAR or regular, we test both
Your DMV renewal notice tells you which check your car needs.
Regular smog check
All other California smog certificates.
Regular checks cover registration renewals that do not name a STAR station, a sale or change of ownership, or a car coming in from out of state.
How a California smog check runs
Four state-set steps, the same for every car that rolls in.
Visual inspection
The inspector confirms the emissions parts installed at the factory are still in place and connected.
On-board computer test
On newer vehicles, the test reads the car's computer through the OBD II port and checks EVAP and EGR where they apply.
Tailpipe test for older vehicles
Older cars and trucks get their exhaust measured at the tailpipe.
Smog certificate sent to the DMV
A pass is sent to the DMV electronically, so you can finish your registration.
What to bring
Your vehicle, its keys, and the DMV renewal notice if you have one.
