What a California smog check covers
Four parts, most completed without much time under the hood.
Visual inspection
The emissions equipment your vehicle came with is checked to confirm it is present and connected.
OBD II computer check
Most gasoline vehicles from 2000 onward are tested through the diagnostic port under the dash. A lit check engine light means the vehicle fails this step.
Tailpipe test, when required
Older vehicles that cannot be tested through the port get a tailpipe emissions reading instead.
Results sent to the DMV
A passing result is sent to the DMV electronically, so you can complete your registration renewal.
