What we build
Six kinds of work leave this shop
Everything is cut, welded, finished and hung by the shop. Pick a pattern from the catalog or draw your own from the castings, spear points and press points we stock.
-
Security screen doors
Built on a one inch tubular steel frame at .065 wall or heavier, with a two inch by one eighth flat bar that closes against the frame so the door cannot be pried. Four two by two hinges with the pins flattened at both ends, and a one piece lock box that takes any standard deadbolt on a 2 3/8 backset.
-
Driveway and entry gates
Single and double swing gates, traditional through modern. A representative measures the opening at your property and notes your color before anything is cut, so the gate is made for the gap it has to fill.
-
Ornamental fences
Fencing in the same pattern and finish as the gate, residential and commercial, in all types of ornamental and wrought work.
-
Gate operators and entry systems
Electric and solar gate operators and telephone entry service, fitted with a new gate or added to one you already have.
-
Repairs, repainting and refinishing
Fence and gate repairs, operator repairs, and repainting of iron you already own, in a color match or one of the standard shades.
-
Door hardware and accessories
Dog and cat doors identical to the ones fitted to wood doors, mail slots with a flap so the post falls between the security door and the wood door, built in wreath hangers, and deadbolts, combination locks, hook locks and electronic locks.

How the ironwork is made
Steel, finish, screen, fitting
The shop has been settling these four questions the same way for decades. Here is what you actually get.
Steel and welds
One inch tubular, .065 or heavier
Frames and doors are built from one inch tubular steel, with half inch or half by one inch stock where the design calls for it. Every piece is .065 thickness or better. Joints of matching stock are welded, then ground and sanded smooth so the piece reads as one, and the areas that would trap water are sealed.
Paint and finish
Electrostatic enamel, or powder coat
Primer and enamel are applied with an electrostatic system that lays down roughly three times the coating of a conventional spray gun. There are about 15 standard colors for doors and 25 for gates, or we can match a color from a sample you bring so the iron sits with your trim. Powder coating is offered as an option: a baked finish that holds its gloss around three times longer, done by a third party, harder and so more prone to chipping, and not repaintable unless it is sandblasted off.
Screens
Galvanized perforated sheet, or expanded metal
Perforated sheet metal is the standard: you see who is at the door without being seen, and it cannot be cut with a knife. We use galvanized sheet now, because the zinc resists the grime and moisture that eat a painted screen. Expanded metal is an option where the door does not face public access and you want airflow, roughly 80 percent against 30 for perforated. Either way the screen is screwed on after the door is painted, not welded, so it comes off when the door is repainted.
Installation
Inside mount, torx security screws
A surface mounted door can be pried off in under a minute, because the one way screws land in the gap between the stud and the door jamb. We mount inside the opening with torx security screws instead, which is the whole reason the door is worth having. A single door takes two to three hours to hang; an opening that is badly out of square goes back to the shop to be modified and refinished.
How a project runs
From your call to the finished gate
-
Call the shop
Tell us roughly what you are after: a gate, a fence, a security door, or a repair to iron you already have.
-
We measure on site
A representative comes to the property, measures the opening and notes your color choice. The estimate is free.
-
You sign the order
Your signature is what starts fabrication. California law bars a contractor from asking for more than 10 percent of the job up front, and you have three days to cancel for any reason. After that, changes go in writing with a change order number.
-
We build it
Normally three weeks or more, depending on the shop’s workload and the size of the job. Nothing is cut until the order is signed, so the piece is made to your measurements.
-
Installation
A single door hangs in two to three hours. Payment for the product is due on installation.
-
One year on workmanship
The work carries a one year warranty. Locks that give trouble after years of use are better replaced than repaired, and we can do that too.
Questions
What people ask before they order
Why get a security door at all?
A security door does three jobs. It gives you visual privacy from whoever is at your front door, it is a deterrent against a forced entry, and it works as a screen door in the summer.
How is yours different from a home improvement store door?
Ours is installed for the maximum security the opening allows, with the attachments on the inside of the door. An outside mount door is easily pried open with a screwdriver or a nail puller, because the one way screws that hold it go into the space between the stud and the door jamb.
Will a steel door rust?
Steel is a base metal and will oxidize if it is left to. Every door is sprayed with a rust prevention primer and finished in oil base enamel. The usual cause of rust after a couple of years is dirt and grime holding moisture against the paint, especially on the screen, which is why we use galvanized screens.
Will my door be identical to the one I saw?
Each model follows the same theme, but the final piece depends on the craftsman, the placement of the lock box and the true height and width of your opening. Castings are poured from sand molds, so small pits and marks come with them. These are hand made pieces and no two are the same.
How long from order to installation?
Normally three weeks or more, depending on the shop’s workload and the size of the job.
How do I look after the finish?
Wash it with water and a non abrasive detergent, never a chemical cleaner. The brush head on a vacuum works well on the screen. If a key turns tight, use a graphite or silicone product, never oil.
